Hamilton is a city defined in part by its location on Lake Ontario. Hamilton Harbour, a sheltered bay at the head of Lake Ontario, is at the centre of our urban area.

Because the shoreline of Lake Ontario is one of the most populated in Canada, the lake has been subject to substantial disturbance and contamination.

In recent years, restoration efforts have begun to improve lake habitats and the Great Lakes are becoming cleaner and more viable as wildlife areas.
