There are many sites to access Lake Ontario; here are some nearby ones that offer good views of wildlife habitat.

Hamilton Region

  • Northeast Harbour Shoreline: see waterfowl year-round, accessed via Eastport Drive underneath the Burlington Skyway (park at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters).

  • Toll Gate Ponds and Van Wagner's Ponds: at the southeast end of the Skyway, these near-shore ponds provide resting and nesting areas for migrating and resident shorebirds. Access is via Eastport Drive and Van Wagner's Beach Road respectively.

  • Woodland Cemetery: waterfowl and other birds can be seen from this area which overlooks Hamilton Harbour and Carroll's Bay.

  • Valens Conservation Area, Hamilton Conservation Authority: the Valens Reservoir is here where you can find migrating shorebirds and ducks.

  • Christie Lake, Christie Conservation Area: another reservoir with trails around its margin and managed wildlife areas.

  • Binbrook Reservoir/Lake Niapenco, Glanbrook: take Hwy 20 from the Q.E.W., turn west at Kirk Rd., going past the village of Binbrook, and then south on Harrison Rd. to entrance.

Outside the Hamilton Region

  • Mountsberg Reservoir, Mountsberg Conservation Area (Conservation Halton): this reservoir was created when Bronte Creek was dammed to prevent flooding and to regulate stream flow. It is surrounded by marshland — home to many birds and amphibians. From Hwy 6 or Guelph Line take Campbellville Rd to Milburough Rd and go north 1 km to entrance.

  • Crawford Lake, Crawford Lake Conservation Area (Conservation Halton): boardwalks surround this unique meromictic lake, also the site of a 15th century Iroquoian village. Located at Steeles Ave. and Guelph Line, 5 km south of Hwy 401.
