Nature in Your Neighbourhood
The Hamilton Naturalists' Club's 'Nature in Your Neighbourhood' project exists to educate youth in Hamilton and environs about the value and beauty of our local natural areas and the necessity of conserving these wonderful spaces.
This initiative seeks to provide interesting and useful information about local natural areas and wildlife to educators in local schools, Scouting and Guiding organizations and community groups.
By bringing information and resources into the classroom, local libraries and other neighbourhood venues, the "Nature In Your Neighbourhood" project aims to encourage local residents to discover and protect wildlife and natural areas in and around Hamilton.
It includes the following endeavours:
'Head-of-the Lake Pocket Nature Guide'
The 'Head-of-the Lake Pocket Nature Guide' is a seasonal guide to nature in our area. This 106-page nature guide describes the plants and animals of Hamilton and Burlington. It is arranged by season and is the perfect companion to traditional field guides for families, educators and naturalists.
Interesting information on both common and rare species of mammals, birds, wildflowers and trees of the Head-of-the-Lake region of Lake Ontario can be found within this book, along with contact information for local organizations involved in environmental conservation and outdoor education. This book was written by HNC member Laurel McIvor and contains over 70 drawings by HNC artists including the beautiful cover painting of a White Water Lily by Gayle Hutchings.
Copies of the Pocket Guide are available at all Burlington and Hamilton library branches, Guide and Scout units, and all school libraries in Hamilton and Burlington.
This publication is also available for purchase at the monthly meetings of the HNC held at Royal Botanical Gardens and from Hamilton and Burlington bookstores and nature and outdoor apparel retail outlets. Copies are available for interested teachers and Guide/Scout leaders at a reduced price and can be distributed at workshops and other events.
Habitats of Hamilton and Halton
The 'Habitats of Hamilton and Halton' project highlights local habitats using a beautiful poster accompanied by descriptive webpages at www.hamiltonnature.org/habitats.
The Hamilton Naturalists' Club will be making presentations to local school classes upon request to introduce this resource to elementary teachers of Science and Technology, Social Studies, History and Geography and to secondary teachers of Canadian Studies and Science. Each school will be given an the attractive poster that highlights the Hamilton-Halton area and the habitats found there. The poster can be purchased at the Royal Botanical Gardens' Nature Interpretive Centre, The Hamilton Conservation Authority and Conservation Halton. It is also available at the monthly meetings of the HNC.

'What's Alive in Hamilton' Slide Show
The 'What's Alive in Hamilton' slide show presentation is available to all local community groups including schools, scouts, guides and seniors clubs. This half hour to one hour long presentation highlights the natural wonder of Hamilton's local wildlife and landscapes. You will see waterfalls and wrens, turtles and trees, hawks and hills in this scenic journey around our very own green spaces. Learn more about who's living in our local habitats! 'Naturally Hamilton and Halton': A Monthly Guide to Nature and Conservation in Your Area
The 'Naturally Hamilton and Hallton'' calendar is a multi-year calendar that highlights seasonal activities of interest, local areas that are at their peak and conservation inspiration. Developed in partnership with local conservation groups and Royal Botanical Gardens, this calendar also features artwork by Hamilton youth. More information about the calendar.
